The Center for the Art of East Asia at the University of Chicago is proud to host this free online symposium, which delves into the exhibition history and understanding of East Asian art in Western contexts.
From its inception in the early twentieth century, East Asian art has been showcased beyond its geographical origins, becoming a crucial means for both the creation and dissemination of knowledge about East Asian artistic traditions as academic disciplines. This symposium critically examine how these exhibitions have been staged within the West, considering their role in shaping perceptions of Eastern arts.
